On Thursday, the Eagles visited the Northville Mustangs in Region 3-1 second round play. Skyline’s Dan Lee began the scoring with a pair of first quarter goals (10:06; 8:12) — joined by Jack Fisher (7:02), Grant Marshall (4:32), and Zach Schwartz (4:12). At the end of the first, Skyline led 5-2. Northville started the second quarter with two goals to draw within 5-4 — but the Eagles answered with three straight scores from Schwartz (his second at 6:54), Ethan Harding (6:46), and Marshall (his second at 6:17) to increase their lead to 8-4. After a Northville goal to draw within 8-5, Skyline responded with a goal from Lee (for the hat trick at 2:41) to go up 9-5. Northville then scored twice within 24 seconds at 1:36 and 1:12 – with the Eagles having the last word on a goal by Marshall (for his hat trick at :54). The teams went into the half with Skyline up 10-7.
The third quarter saw tense action and clever goal tending by Skyline’s Jordan Hickman. The only goal of the period was by Northville at 3:53, leaving Skyline ahead 10-8. In the fourth quarter, momentum shifted to the Mustangs on the heels of several man down situations with three unanswered scores to start the quarter. Down 11-10 with the clock winding down, Fisher tallied the first Skyline goal of the half (his second at 4:32) to tie the game. A minute later, the Mustangs responded to go up a goal — but six seconds later Schwartz scored to tie (for the hat trick at 3:18). Regulation ended with both teams even at 12-12.
In OT, both teams had early opportunities, but Northville notched the winning goal at 1:30. It was the second year Skyline was eliminated from the playoffs in OT (they lost in 2014 to University of Detroit Jesuit in the regional semi-final). The Mustangs will advance to the Region 3-1 semi-finals on Tuesday, May 26 where they will face state #2 Detroit Country Day (who moved on with a 17-3 win over Ann Arbor Pioneer).
