Last year, we won the State Championship. But, when 11 seniors graduated there was a lot of concern for the state of our team. Not only did we lose players who were very used to each other, we lost the power house of James Roszypal, and went down from five scorers to basically two. Apart from Matteo, Wilson, Andrew, Hector and Duncan, the rest of this year’s varsity team had not gotten a lot of play time together. Additionally, while Josh, Michael and Jimmy did an awesome job on post season as the Bench Squad, they didn’t actually set foot in the water during states.

Knowing the stakes, JV stepped up in the post season and worked year round in both swimming and Club Wolverine to get better, stronger and faster. Still, having last year’s JV boys as starters was a big step and as I hear across the board. Even with the best player in the state (Matteo) and the best coach (Rebecca), there was concern for their ability to hold their own this season. In fact, despite being the winners of the State Championship in 2015, Michigan Water Polo Association rated AASkyline 6th in the first week of the season.

Therefore, we are all incredibly impressed with the way the team is performing this year. They are coming together better every game and, despite a crushing loss to Okemos, they have exceeded all expectations. This week they beat Walled Lake, Pioneer, Grand Blanc and Chelsea and moved into the 3rd place in State Rankings.
