Shrine Catholic High School
Skyline High School
Skylineâs inaugural season at the Arctic Coliseum got off to a great start as the Eagles mercied the visiting Knights of Royal Oak Shrine Catholic 12-2, taking only two periods of play to do so.
Sophomore winger Noah Bradburn scored 2 goals, and linemate Junior center Josh Ernst sandwiched 1 in between Bradburnâs as the top line scored 3 goals in 32 seconds to open up the scoring for Skyline. The Knights scored on a nice shot a few shifts later, and then things settled down. Late in the period Ernst scored his second of the night at the 5:57 mark, and Freshman phenom Isaac Lippert added his first as an Eagle with just under 3 minutes to play in the period to make the score 5-1 heading into the first intermission.
The Eagles picked up quickly where they left off as sophomore defenseman Jacob Rothenberg sent one in from the point during a two-man advantage just 17 seconds into the second period. Less than one minute later, however, Shrine narrowed the Skyline lead when they made a pretty play to put one in behind goaltender Hector Clarke. But that was when the Eagles took over for good and scored 6 unanswered goals as they finished off the Knights in fine fashion. Isaac Lippert scored his second goal of the night at 15:28, then Zach Roberts added another for his first career goal as an Eagle at 13:44. Junior captain Ryan VanDiepen got Skylineâs 9th goal at 12:58 to cap his stellar 5 point night (1 goal, 4 assists), and freshman Henry Hescheles scored his first as an Eagle at the 7:50 mark. Senior captain Ryan Wilson added one of his own at 4:25 as he corralled a rebound and sent a backhander up high over an outstretched goalie. Freshman enforcer Matt Bahr capped the Skyline victory as he got off a nice wrister from the right faceoff dot that found its way into the top right corner of the net.
Senior goaltender Hector Clarke saw limited action with 8 shots against. Thought the shots the Knights had were few in quantity, they were quality chances. Clarke had to work hard to stay mentally focused on the game as the Eagles dominated play and spent much time in the other end – he came up big on the shots he did face.
