Grand Ledge High School
Skyline High School
The beezos from Skyline got the Thanksgiving break started out right with a convincing win over the Grand Ledge/Fowlerville (GLF) icers at the Arctic Coliseum Monday night. The final score of 6-3 belies how dominating the Eagles were as they controlled the play from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer. Good hustle at both ends of the ice, crisp passes, good positional play, and guys supporting their teammates, made the game look easy from the stands.
The first period saw the Eagles get off to a quick 2-0 lead on goals from junior captain Ryan VanDiepen and sophomore offensive defenseman Jacob Rothenberg. VanDiepenâs goal came just 2-1/2 minutes into the game on a power play goal set up nicely from sophomores Noah Bradburn and Luke Lippert. Rothenbergâs goal was unassisted as he gathered the puck at center ice when GLF was in the middle of a line change, walked in on the goalie, and sent a rising shot into the top of the net. GLF closed the gap when they scored with 7:20 left in the first. Near the end of the period, Skyline took some penalties one after the other resulting in a lengthy 2 man disadvantage. Senior goalie Khegan Harvey made some key stops, and the Eagle penalty killers were able to hold off the GLF onslaught. The period ended with Skyline leading 2-1.
The game took a turn for the better in the second period if you were an Eagle. Skyline scored 3 goals in the middle session while holding GLF scoreless. Just 40 seconds into the fresh period, Senior captain Ryan Wilson and freshman Isaac Lippert combined on a pretty play to put Skyline up 3-1. As the two gained the zone with speed, Wilson streaked down the right side and tipped a laser beam pass in from Lippert on a bang, bang play. At the 7:54 mark, Lippert cashed in on an Eagles power play to make the score 4-1 as he redirected a shot from the point sent in by Rothenberg . About 2-1/2 minutes later, freshman Henry Hescheles scored on a fluky play as his line buzzed around the GLF zone creating havoc. His shot from an awkward angle nearly behind the goal line bounced around up front and caromed off the goalieâs leg pad and into the net. Fellow freshman Ryan Schmunk and senior defenseman Hank McMillian had the helpers on that one. The score after two was 5-1.
The third period seemed like just a bit of a formality, but the Eagles were able to keep their focus and finish off the visiting team. GLF scored at 13:37 of the period to cut the Eagleâs lead to just 3 goals. But 3 minutes later, junior Josh Ernst scored as he crashed the net with VanDiepen and Bradburn earning assists on the play. Unfortunately GLF wasnât done as they had one more goal left in them. With just under a minute left, they were able to get through and put one more shot in. The final score was 6-3.
Overall, this was the best team effort put forth to date by the Eagles. They improved their record to 2-0-1. Our next game is Wednesday 11/23 at 7:00 vs Dexter at Vets. Come out and support your Skyline icers!
