Milford High School
Skyline High School
After eight days without playing a game, the Eagles looked a bit discombobulated as they took on the Milford Mavericks in a Wednesday night tilt at the Arctic Coliseum. The first period saw Skyline carry the play, but they were just missing the connection with each other to find the back of the net. The Eagles were able to weather a 5 on 3 penalty kill late in the period. With less than 2 minutes left in the period, senior goalie Khegan Harvey had to come up with some big saves as Milford was bringing a lot of heat with the two man advantage. Just seconds after the Eagles got back to full strength, Milford was able to keep up their pressure in the zone and scored the only goal of the period to make it a 1-0 game going into the second.
The second period was kinder to the Eagles as their persistence paid off. While on another penalty kill, Freshman Isaac Lippert scored a short-handed goal just 2 minutes into the period. Gaining the zone on a pass from captain Ryan Wilson, Lippert blasted a rocket shot that beat the Maverick net minder up high to even things up 1-1. About 4 minutes later, assistant captain Luke Lippert put the Eagles ahead as he was able to find the puck amongst a pileup in front of the Milford net. CJ Bahr and Isaac Lippert got helpers on the play as they scrummed around the net in a free-for-all that culminated with the sophomore defenseman finally pushing the puck past the sprawled Maverick goalie. The score was 2-1 in the Eaglesâ favor and it seemed like they had some momentum going. Sure enough, just 5 minutes later the Eagles struck again. This time it was assistant captain Casey Ketola with a power play goal. The senior defenseman got a pass at the point from junior center Josh Ernst, and quickly sent a low shot in on net that beat the Milford goalie. The score after two was 3-1, Eagles.
The Mavericks made the third period a bit too interesting as they were not planning on going down easy. At the 8:17 mark, they scored to get within a goal of tying the game. After that, Harvey had to play a perfect game and come up with some key saves throughout the period to maintain the Eaglesâ lead. Then with 4:42 left in the game, Wilson gave the Eagles some breathing room as he buried a beautiful pass from Ernst into the net as the two used their speed to get past the Maverick defenders. But the two goal lead was short-lived. Milford pulled their goalie with a little more than 2 minutes left in the game, and their gamble paid off as they netted a goal with 2:35 left to get back within one. After the ensuing face off, the Mavericks were once again able to pull their goalie for a sixth attacker, but the Skyline defense and Harvey were able to shut them down the rest of the way. Finally with just 6 seconds left, Luke Lippert was able to corral the puck in the Eaglesâ defensive zone and send it 80 feet down the ice into the open net to seal the victory 5-3.
The Eagles record is 4-1-1. Their next game is at home(Arctic Coliseum) on Monday 12-12 at 7:00 versus the Eastside Stars.
