Eagles News · Icers notch their 6th mercy win of the season against Chippewa Valley

Thanks in part to a hat trick by junior defenseman Jacob Rothenberg and a shutout by sophomore goalie Brendan Cobb, Skyline (15-4) recorded their sixth mercy of the season on Friday as they deafeated Chippewa Valley (1-11) in front of a home crowd at the Coliseum.

The Eagles’ biggest challenge of the night was getting pumped up for the tilt against a team that had only won one game all season.  Despite controlling the play, the Eagles only managed two goals in the first period.  Rothenberg (assisted by Ryan Van Diepen and Ryan Schmunk) tallied his first goal of the night midway  through the period on a wrist shot from the point.  A little over three minutes later he scored again on a rush that started with a breakout pass from CJ Bahr and ended with a quick shot that beat the Big Red goalie over his left shoulder to make it 2-0 Skyline.

The second period proved to be big again for the Eagles as they doubled their goal production of the first with four goals.  A little over six minutes into the center frame, Isaac Lippert got his first goal of the night (assisted by Shea O’Brien and Rothenberg).  Two minutes later Ryan VanDiepen (assisted by CJ Bahr and Schmunk) scored as he jammed the puck past the besieged Chip goaler.  Sei Nakaura finished off a nice pass from Luke Lippert 1-1/2 minutes later to make it 5-0.  Then with less than a minute left in the period, Isaac Lippert put in his second of the night on a bang, bang play with Noah Bradburn and Shea O’Brien to take 6-0 lead into the second intermission.

The third period proved to be short as the forgone conclusion was quickly realized within 5 minutes.  Luke Lippert went coast to coast as he corralled a pass sent to him from Jake McDevitt and made it 7-0 as he easily slid the puck past the Big Red netminder.  Rothenberg (assisted by Luke Lippert) finished things up as he completed his hat trick on another shot from the point to end the game in a mercy 8-0.

The Eagles lace them up again on Thursday afternoon when they take on Woodhaven in the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase (MPHSHS) at 2:00 at the Coliseum.
