Boys Junior Varsity Water Polo, Boys Varsity Water Polo · Boys water polo 6-0 in district play after 12-5 Pioneer win

Skyline’s varsity water polo team finished league play on Thursday, September 28, with a decisive win against Ann Arbor Pioneer.

The 12-5 victory boosts the team’s into top position for post-season play and shows how well the team is performing across the roster.

“It’s exciting going into districts as the number-one seed,” Coach Reb Godek said after the game. ‘It gives us a little bit of confidence, but we know it’s more of a reason to work that much harder every day at practice.”

Godek’s strategy for the rest of the season is to fine-tune the set-up offense, since the level of play will mean counter-attack goals won’t be as common in the post-season.

She also noted that the team is developing their skills as a group.

“We’re seeing a lot of guys able to step up and hold their own. … It’s exciting to see that growth,” she said.

Thursday night’s victory started with an early goal by Shane MacNeil, who scored after taking a pass from Matteo Procoppe. Goalie Mason Hickman kept the momentum by blocking a 5-meter shot, then Matteo scored two more goals. With an additional two goals by Wilson Noll – including one on a long half-pool pass that snuck into the net – the team was up 5-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Additional goals came from Matteo (2) in the second quarter. Spencer Jyawook scored on a pass from Patrick Dempsey, then Liam Keating scored on a five-meter shot – and did it again a short time later. Two more goals by Wilson in the fourth brought the score up to 12-5 by the final buzzer.

Next for the Eagles: A rematch with Pioneer at home on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Both Varsity and JV will play.

That’s followed by a two-day home varsity tournament featuring many top state and out-of-state teams. Tournament play starts Friday, Oct. 6, with two games for the Eagles at 5:10 (v St. Charles of Columbus, Ohio) and 7:40 (v Chelsea Piers of Connecticut). Saturday’s games are at 3 p.m. against Rockford, the number-one ranked team in the state, then at 5:30 p.m. against Greenwich (Connecticut) A.

Boys Junior Varsity Water Polo, Boys Varsity Water Polo · 3 wins in one day bring Eagles to 5-0 in water polo district play

The Skyline Eagles remained undefeated in league play after heading to Ann Arbor Huron on Saturday, September 23, for a 3-game district seeding tournament. All three games were important to the team, which is ranked 2nd in Michigan and is starting to look ahead to the positioning for season playoffs in late October.

The two early games were decisive victories with a combined 46 goals scored by the Eagles.

The first game was played against Chelsea. The 13-goal first quarter set the tone for the game, which ended at 20-3. Top scorers include: Matteo Procoppe (6) and Keegan Gardner (5).

The afternoon game was a contest against Walled Lake. The Eagles scored 10 goals in each of the first two quarters, ending the game at 23-3. Top scorers were Matteo Procoppe and Spencer Jyawook (4 each) and Ethan Procoppe (3).

The final game started at 6 p.m. as  Eagles took to the water against their cross-town rivals. The Huron River Rats, ranked 6th in Michigan, always play a solid game, and they felt the same pressure to score a district win. The four quarters generated a fast-paced and tension-filled game – one where the teams exchanged goal for goal during the first half.

The first goal came for Huron, just 13 seconds into the game – then two minutes  later, Wilson Noll pitched one into the net for the Eagles. The next two goals went to Huron as the pace of play escalated before two goals by Matteo Procoppe tied the game.

The second quarter started with two more goals for Huron before the team’s French connection – the brothers Procoppe – each scored to return the game to a tie at 5-5.Spencer Jyawook followed that to take the lead at 6-5, before Huron got a tie goal with just 6 seconds left to play.

Skyline’s players stayed hungry for goals while their defense kept up the pressure against some of the district’s top shooters. Players like Shane MacNeil, Nick Pachera, Alex Eisman, Keegan and Wilson fought hard to keep the Huron shot count low, while goalie Mason Hickman conquered some targeted shots.  The result for the Eagles was 5 more goals in the 3rd quarter and 3 in the 4th, including one during a rare goalie ejection affecting the Rats.  Huron was held to one goal in each of the last two periods of play. Skyline’s next goals came from Matteo (5), Ethan, Keegan and Josh Smith.

The final score: 14-8, representing a big victory for the Eagles after one long day of water polo.

One game remains for the Eagles in district play: They’ll travel to Ann Arbor Pioneer on Wednesday, September 27, for JV at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
