Game Recap

The Eagles got their year off to a great start, as they beat the Griffins from Fenton-Linden 10-2 Wednesday night at the Hartland Ice Arena.

The Griffins got on the board first as they converted on an early power play opportunity as Junior defenseman Luke Lippert was serving a penalty for checking from behind. The Eagles were able to kill off the rest of the 5 minute major penalty without any more damage being done. After having several good opportunities with nothing to show for it, the Eagles finally broke the seal on the season as Junior winger Noah Bradburn buried a pass from Isaac Lippert to tie the game at 1-1. The period ended with the score knotted at 1-1.

The eagles took over play in the second period and didn’t look back, scoring 4 unanswered goals:
Ryan Schmunk (assisted by CJ Bahr and Luke Lippert) scored to make it 2-1.
Isaac Lippert (assisted by Shea O’Brien) scored to make it 3-1.
Shea O’Brien (assisted by Kotoba Nakamura) scored to make it 4-1.
Isaac Lippert (assisted by Zach Roberts and Kotoba Nakamura) scored his second of the game to make it 5-1.

The third period saw Skyline continue its dominance as they put 5 goals in, while allowing the Griffins only 1 more:
Henry Hescheles (assisted by Like Lippert) scored to make it 6-1.
Noah Bradburn (assisted by Zach Roberts and CJ Bahr) scored his second of the night to make it 7-1.
The Griffins scored after the ensuing faceoff to make it 7-2.
Ryan Schmunk (assisted by Sam Begosso and Ryan VanDiepen) scored his second of the night to make it 8-2.
Ryan VanDiepen (assisted by Ryan Schmunk) scored to make it 9-2.
Shea O’Brien (assisted by Henry Hescheles) ended the drubbing with 46 seconds left in the game to bring the final score to 10-2, giving Skyline a mercy victory.

Freshman goalie Tommy Letke was between the pipes for the Eagles, and he played a spectacular game in his first appearance in a varsity game.

Skyline plays The Eastside Stars from East Lansing this Saturday at 5:00 at the Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea. Come cheer your Eagles on to another victory.

Eagles News · 16-9 win means Skyline advances to semi-finals in state water polo championships

Skyline v Grand Haven
Skyline’s Eagles scored a big win on Friday, November 10, during their first game in the 2017 Michigan Water Polo Association state championships.
The team took to the water in the last game for the first round, held at Ann Arbor Huron High School’s Ratatorium. They played a tough Grand Haven team, which came into the round ranked fourth in the state.
Now, following the 16-9 win, the Eagles head into a semi-final game against arch-rival Rockford. The teams will battle for a place in the championship game starting at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, November 11.
In Friday night’s game, two five-goal periods before the first half set up the Eagles for the win. Sharp defense from goalie Mason Hickman and his defenders kept the pressing Grand Haven team at bay.
Senior co-captain Wilson Noll nailed the first at just 21 seconds into the game, moments after he won the sprint.
Next up was senior co-captain Matteo Procoppe, followed by one by Josh Smith. Matteo got a second, then freshman Ethan Procoppe scored one right at the buzzer, as the period ended at 5-3 Skyline.
The second period ended at 10-3, following goals by Matteo (2), Wilson (2) and Josh.
Grand Haven gained some momentum in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. About halfway through, Matteo ended up in front of the net and scored on a Grand Haven exclusion, and Ethan scored again about a minute later on a rebound from a shot by Keegan Gardner. Both teams scored again with less than a minute to go, ending the third at 13-7.
Grand Haven pushed for two more goals in the fourth, but Skyline scored three – keeping their lead. Goals came from Matteo (2) and Nick Pachera, who popped on in with 49 seconds until the buzzer.

IMG_7700_redimensionnee

Skyline’s Eagles jump into the pool on Friday, November 10, for their first game of three to determine Michigan’s state champs in boys water polo.
The game will start at 7:45 p.m. at Ann Arbor Huron, 2727 Fuller Road. The pool entrance is at the far west side of the building.
The game will be against Grand Haven. The next two games will be on Saturday, with the times and opponents determined by the outcome of the Friday night lineups.
The Eagles come into the game as runner-up Regional Champs, following a hard-fought OT loss to Okemos in the last playoff round. They’re also the last team from Washtenaw County to advance to state-level play.
The lineup includes Matteo Procoppe, the East Region MVP. He and Wilson Noll were named first-team All-Region players. Keegan Gardner and goalie Mason Hickman earned honorable mentions on that list.
Coach Reb Godek, who lead the team to a state championship in 2015, was named East Region Coach of the Year.
The team finished 8th in 2016, after standout goalie Duncan Kennedy was injured in regionals.
