Skyline out kicked and out scored the Kicking Mules of Bedford 4-2 on Monday night at the Coliseum in a White division clash that featured a steady stream of players to the penalty box from both benches. Freshman goalie Tommy Letke earned his 8th win of the season as the Eagles improved to 8-1 overall, 4-0 in conference play.
The Eagles found the back of the net late in the first period with a little over 4 minutes remaining. Senior captain Ryan VanDiepen (assisted by Ryan Schmunk) to give Skyline a 1-0 lead to get things started. Then with 1:03 left in the period, assistant captain Luke Lippert (assisted by C.J. Bahr) scored on a nifty shot after stickhandling through heavy traffic.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the middle stanza, but ended up tied 2-2 on the other side as the Mules still had a bit of kick left in them – they scored 2 goals of their own while shutting down the Eagle’s offense.
The third period saw Skyline bear down on their opponent as they tightened up the defense and buzzed the Mule netminder time and time again. They finally broke through as Isaac Lippert (assisted by Noah Bradburn) scored with 9:10 left in the game to get the lead back 3-2. With stellar goaltending by Letke, the Eagles managed to keep the puck out of their net despite a lot of pressure from Bedford. Then with 1:38 left, Ryan Schmunk finished a nice play from Luke Lippert as he sent a hard shot past the Mule goalie to make it 4-2 Skyline. Bedford pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but their frantic attack ended up for naught. The Eagles had a few tries at the open net, but the score remained at 4-2 when the final buzzer sounded.
Skyline will face SEC division rival Saline on Wednesday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube in a battle for division supremacy. Come support the Eagles at 5:15.
