The Eagles ran into a buzz saw on Thursday night in Howell as the Highlanders dismantled them 7-1 in front of a raucous home crowd at the Grand Oaks Ice Arena. The first period saw the Eagles fall behind by a goal early on as Howell capitalized on a Shea O’Brien slashing penalty. But things were looking up as Skyline’s Luke Lippert (assisted by Ryan Schmunk and Ryan VanDiepen) scored on an Eagle power play a little over two minutes later. Unfortunately the wheels began to fall off with less than a minute remaining in the first when Howell scored short-handed on another Eagle power play opportunity to put them up 2-1.
Second period action saw Howell score another short-handed goal en route to a two-goal period as they neutralized Skyline’s offensive attack. The period ended with Howell leading 4-1.
The third period was much of the same as the Highlanders out-muscled, out-shot and out-scored the Eagles 3-0, ending with a final score of 7-1.
The Eagles lace them up again this Saturday 12-9 at the Arctic Coliseum against conference foe Pinckney at 4:30.
