The Eagles from Lakeland gave Skyline their first back-to-back loss of the season on Wednesday night in Lakeland 5-3. Despite scoring first, Skyline was not able to keep things going on the right direction the rest of the night. Luke Lippert got the Eagles on the board in the first, assisted by kid brother Isaac and left winger Noah Bradburn for the period’s only goal.
The second period proved problematic for Skyline as Lakeland outscored them 2-0 to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. Things could have been worse for the Eagles had it not been for the stellar goaltending effort by Brendan Cobb in his debut for the Eagles – he made a number of acrobatic saves to give his team a chance to stay in the game.
Skyline came out of the gate fast and furious in the third period, and got a few good scoring chances in the first two shifts, but it was Lakeland who drew first blood in the final frame with their third unanswered goal in a row to put them up 3-1. Shea O’Brien (assisted by Isaac Lippert and Luke Lippert) got the Eagles pumped up as he scored a gritty goal to get them back into the game at 3-2. Unfortunately Lakeland came right back to get their 2 goal lead back 4-2, then scored on the ensuing faceoff to quickly put the game out of the reach for the Columbia Blue 5-2. Ryan Schmunk made it a bit more respectable when he redirected a shot by Noah Bradburn in the waning seconds of the game to make it 5-3.
The Eagles come back home on Saturday as they take on the Huron River Rats at 2:30
