Ann Arbor Skyline faced Adrian at home on December 19 for an early-season swim meet before the holiday break. The contest was the Eagles’ second of the season – and the boys scored their second win, beating the Lenawee County team 146-39.
The night started strong for Skyline as the A-B-C medley relays finished 1-2-3.
Spencer Jyawook scored a blistering hot 1:44.34 in the 200 freestyle, well under the state qualifying time. He was followed by Keith Kozma, who was just seconds from the cut, and brothers Kareem El-Tawil in 3rd and Bassem El-Tawil in 5th.
Junior Ben Keith came in 1st in the tough 200 yard IM, fueled in part by his picture-perfect butterfly. Teammate Matteo Procoppe came in 2nd, followed by Alex Kurniawan in 3rd and John Evangelista in 4th.
Josh Smith swam the fastest 50 free of the night, followed by Adrian’s Jacob McKenzie and Skyline’s Russell Noble – all of whom touched the wall within a second of each other.
Skyline’s divers continued their strong early season showing as Henry Schirmer and Andrew Ceely finished first and second, respectively.
Skyline headed into the second half of the meet with a lead that grew after the 100 yard butterfly. Michael MacGillivray, Alex Kurniawan, Derek Mrachko and Wilson Noll took the top four finishes.
Both teams fielded several 100 freestyle swims, feeding three heats. Top finishes from Skyline – all under 1 minute – came from Shane MacNeil (53.09), Russell Noble, John Evangelista and Patrick Dempsey.
Spencer and Keith returned to the 500 freestyle with the same results as the earlier event – Spencer well under the state qualifying time and Keith right on the verge of it. Alex Eisman and Ryan Hsia followed to round out the top finishes for the Eagles.
Skyline’s A and B 200 free relays finished 1-2. The A relay of Kareem, Shane, Derek and Alex Eisman came in at 1:36.61. The B relay of Nick Partridge, Keegan Gardner, Russell and John finished at 1:45.01.
David Cleason showed his state-level backstroke with a 54.01 top finish, followed by Atticus Dewey, Matteo and Noah Boucher for Skyline.
The Eagles finished 1-2-3 in the breaststroke, with Sam Konigsberg, Keegan and Nick posting the three fastest times.
Skyline headed into the final 400 free relay with a 134-37 lead, which only grew after the waves stopped churning.
The boys moved onto their holiday break training, which included tough two-a-days after a few days off from the pool. They’re building stamina for their first week back to school, when they face home meets against Monroe on January 11 and then a tri-contest against Howell and Brother Rice on January 13.
